👋Welcome to the Intelligent Transportation Lab of HKUST (GZ)

Intelligent Transportation (INTR) Laboratory is a cutting-edge research facility within the Intelligent Transportation Domain at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (Guangzhou). The laboratory specializes in the modeling of multimodal and complex transportation systems, applying state-of-the-art data science, operations research, systems engineering, and management approaches to tackle challenges in transportation networks, supply chain optimization, and infrastructure asset management. INTR fosters a highly collaborative and interdisciplinary research environment, where students have the opportunity to work alongside leading academics, peers, and industry experts from diverse disciplines such as transportation engineering, artificial intelligence, optimization science, and more. The laboratory actively promotes international collaboration, with strong ties to numerous research groups and centers in the United States and beyond, encouraging and supporting student participation in international exchange programs and joint research initiatives. Moreover, the laboratory embraces a strong emphasis on industry-relevant research and technology transfer. By adopting a model that integrates academic inquiry with practical applications, it offers students hands-on experiences in product development, testing, and market deployment, preparing them for careers at the intersection of academia, industry, and technological innovation.

Professor Bai Yun is the head of the INTR Laboratory, where he leads a team of researchers in the field of transportation infrastructure management, health monitoring, safety perception, risk analysis, and network modeling and optimization. A graduate of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign with a Ph.D. in Civil Engineering, Professor Bai’s academic journey began at Zhejiang University, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering. Before joining HKUST (GZ), Professor Bai served as an Assistant Research Professor at Rutgers University from 2014 to 2022, where he delved into the management and optimization of transportation infrastructure. His research career includes a postdoctoral fellowship at UIUC from 2013 to 2014 and an internship as an Operations Research Analyst at Caterpillar Inc. in 2012.

Multiple Ph.D. / RA positions available! Please feel free to send your resume to yunbai@hkust-gz.edu.cn. For MPhil students, we still have open positions, please contact me after passing the interview with the school's Red Bird MPhil committee.
